Definition Of Project
The English word ‘Project‘ comes from the word ‘Projectum‘ which derived from the Latin verb ‘Proicere‘. The word projectum means “before an action”. That is to say, a project is an organized unit, which is well-performed by combining interrelated and interdependent tasks to achieve goals and objectives in accordance with a predetermined program within a specified budget and on time. Different individuals, experts and organizations have defined projects in different ways. Some important definitions related to the project are mentioned below :
1. According to Oxford Dictionary of Business, “Project is a set of activities intended to produce a specific output, which has a definite beginning and end.”
2. According to Business Dictonary “A Project is a planned set of interrelated tasks to be executed over a fixed period and within certain cost and other limitations.”
3. According to the Project Management Institute (PMI), “A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service or result.”
4. According to The British Standard, “Project is unique set of coordinated activities, with definite starting and finishing points, undertaken by an individual or organization to meet specific objectives within defined schedule cost and performance parameters.”
5. According to Adam And Ebert, “A project is a one shot set of activities with a definite beginning and ending point.”
6. According to Association Of Project Management, “A project is a unique, transient endeavor, undertaken to achieve planned objectives, which could be defined in terms of outputs, outcomes or benefits.”
7. According to The Project Management Hut, “A project is made up of a set of tasks that need to be completed by a variety of people within your organization.”
So, in the light of the above definitions, it can be said that a project is a set of single, interrelated and interdependent tasks, the planning and implementation of which is done in a specific sequence, in order to achieve the goals of an organization by creating a single product or service in a specific time and within a specific budget.
