Method of Measurement: Length Unit

We all know, internationally and universally accepted unit of length measurement is meter. In 1875, scientists from different countries of the world met in a meeting and determined a certain amount for 1 meter in length. The scientists present at the meeting put 2 lines on the two ends of a rod made of platinum-iridium alloy. They determined the distance between those 2 lines of metal as 1 meter at zero degree Celsius temperature. Henceforth the meter is a smaller unit for measuring shorter distances than the original unit of length; eg – Centimeter, Millimeter, etc. and larger units for measuring distance; eg – Decameter, Kilometer, etc. are used. The units of length measurement needed in daily life are mensioned below.

Metric units of length measurement:
10 millimeters (mm) = 1 centimeter (cm)
10 centimeters (cm) = 1 decimeter (dm)
10 decimeters (dm) = 1 meter (m)
10 meters (m) = 1 decameter (decami.)
10 decameters (decami.) = 1 hectometer (hm)
10 Hectometers (hm) = 1 Kilometer (km)
100 centimeters (cm) = 1 meter (m)
1000 meters (m) = 1 kilometer (km)

Unit of Length is : Meter

British units of length
12 inches = 1 foot (ft.)
3 feet = 1 yard (y.)
1760 yards = 1 mile (ma.)

Comparative relation of metric and British units in measuring length
1 meter (m) = 39.37 inches (approx.)
1 kilometer (km) = 0.62 miles (approx.)
1 inch = 2.54 centimeters (cm) (approx.)
1 yard = 0.9144 meter (m) (approx.)
1 mile = 1.6 kilometers (km) (approx) [compiled]
