Preposition: Definition and Classification

Preposition হল একটি বাক্যের (sentence) অলংকার। Pre- শব্দের অর্থ পূর্বে। Position শব্দের অর্থ অবস্থান। যে সব শব্দ (word), Noun বা Pronoun এর পূর্বে বসে নতুন সম্পর্ক গঠন করে, সে সব শব্দ (word) কে Preposition বলে।

Preposition এর প্রকারভেদ: Preposition মূলত ৪ প্রকার। এগুলো হলো:
1) Simple Preposition
2) Double Preposition
3) Compound Preposition এবং
4) Participle Preposition. নিম্নে Preposition এর প্রকারভেদ সম্পর্কে বিস্তারিত তুলে ধরা হলো:

1) Simple Preposition: একটি Word নিয়ে যে Preposition হয়, তাকে Simple Preposition বলে। উদাহরণস্বরূপ (for example): at, of, on, for, out, to, via, among, between, by, in, since, under, etc.

2) Double Preposition: দুইটি Word মিলে যে Preposition হয়, তাকে Double Preposition বলে। উদাহরণস্বরূপ (for example): into, within, upon, throughout, inside, without, out of, from behind, outside of, from above, up to, next to, etc.

3) Compound Preposition: Preposition নয় এমন শব্দ (word) এর সাথে Simple Preposition এর সংমিশ্রণে যে Preposition গঠিত হয়, তাকে Compound Preposition বলে। Compound Preposition এর অপর নাম Complex preposition বা Phrase Preposition। Compound Preposition মূলত ২ প্রকার। এগুলো হলো:

3.1) Two-word Compound Prepositions: এ প্রকারের compound Preposition এর গঠন প্রণালী নিম্নরূপ তুলে ধরা হলো।
Structure: key word + Simple Preposition as modifier
উদাহরণস্বরূপ (for example): according to, along with, apart from, because of, contrary to, due to, except for, instead of, prior to, regardless of etc.

3.2) Three-word Compound Prepositions: এ প্রকারের compound Preposition এর গঠন প্রণালী নিম্নরূপ তুলে ধরা হলো।
Structure: Simple Preposition + key word + Simple Preposition as modifier
উদাহরণস্বরূপ (for example): on behalf of, in front of, in aid of, in according with, in line with, by means of, in relation to, with reference to, with respect to, etc.

4) Participle Preposition: যে Preposition এর শেষে ” ing / en/ ed ” থাকে, তাকে Participle Preposition বলে।
Structure: key word + ing/ en/ ed
উদাহরণস্বরূপ (for example): During, given, Considering, provided, regarding, respected, owing, etc.
Note: Preposition এর আরেকটি irregular type হল “Disguised preposition”। মূলত এই Preposition গুলো disguised বা ছদ্মবেশে অবস্থান করে।
উদাহরণস্বরূপ (for example):
He went a begging = এখানে a এর পরিবর্তে on বসানো যেতে পারে।
He went a hunting = এখানে a এর পরিবর্তে on বসানো যেতে পারে।
She woke up at 7 o’clock = এখানে o’clock অর্থ – 7 of clock।

(C) Concerning, Considering
(D) Despite, Down, During
(E) Except, Excepting, Excluding
(F) For, From, Far, Forward, Failing, Following
(G) Given
(I) In, Into, Inside
(M) Minus
(N) Near
(O) Of, Off, On, Out, Onto, Outside, Opposite, Over
(P) Past, Per, Plus, Providing
(R) Round, Regarding
(S) Since, Save
(T) To, Towards, Towards, Through, Than
(U) Up, Upon, Under, Underneath, Unlike, Until
(V) Versus, Via
(W) With, Within, Without, Worth

যে সব Preposition সবচেয়ে বেশি ব্যবহৃত হয়, এক নজরে (at a glance) নিচে উল্লেখ করা হলো:
