What is Database?

A database is a storage system where one or more data files are stored. The word ‘data’ comes from the Latin word and means ‘information’ and the root meaning of the word ‘base’ is ‘the thing kept inside’. So, the word ‘database’ means a repository of information or a system or structure created to gather or collect information.

A database is also called a data store or archive. But just collecting some data does not make a database. How many interrelated data are organized in a database. That is, if some interrelated data is organized in one or more files or tables, it is called a database.

According to Elmarsi & Navathe, ‘A data base is a collection of related data.’

According to Uma G Gupta, ‘A data base is an interacted repository of logically related data, organised in such a way as to facilitate easy accessing and processing of data.’

According to Ramakrishnan & Gehrke, ‘A data base is a collection of data, typically describing the activities of one more related orgnization.’

Finally, a database is a collection of logically interrelated data, which is stored in an organized condition through one or more file records or tables.
