Bibichini Shahi Mosque | Barguna

Bibichini Shahi Mosque is located in a village namely Bibichini of Betagi Upazila under the Barguna district of Bangladesh. Bibichini village is about ten kilometers north of Betagi upazila town of Barguna district. This mosque may be seen on a hill about nine meters high from the plain in this village.

The Bibichini Shahi Mosque is a domed and built-in square plan. The main entrance and two windows are located on the eastern wall of this mosque with walls about 1.8 meters wide. In addition, the north and south walls of the mosque have three windows. Gothic arches are reflected in its main entrances and windows. This beautiful mosque, built of red terracotta bricks and lime concretes, has no plaster.

According to historical sources, Hazrat Shah Niamat Ullah (r.) came to Betagi in the Barguna district from Persia in approximately the seventeenth century CE. He came here to spread Islam and built this beautiful mosque. It is also known that Niamat Ullah had two sisters named Chinibibi and Isabibi. It is believed that the village was named Bibichini after his two sisters. The mosque built by him was also named Bibichini Shahi Mosque. This mosque is also known as Parir Masjid (Fairy Mosque) to locals.

According to the Bangladesh Gazette published on 2 April 1987, the Bibichini Shahi Mosque is a protected antiquity of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, currently listed and under the supervision of the Department of Archaeology under the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.
