We all are more or less familiar with the words ‘Sultan’, ‘Sultana’, ‘Sultani’, rule and ‘Sultanate’. But do we all know the origin and meaning of these words? Maybe not everyone does. Here, I will try to highlight the issues related to the word Sultan to you.
‘Sultan’ is a title related to Rule. It is originally an Arabic word; which means ‘power’, ‘authority’, ‘rulership’. And this word is derived from the word ‘Sultah’; which means ‘authority’ or ‘power’.
Later, the word Sultan was used as the title of various rulers. All these rulers were sovereign and independent in their rule in different regions, without being directly controlled by the Caliphate. And the region ruled by the Sultan is called Sultanate.
